There was mass campaign to motivate and compel electorates to get registered for the forthcoming general elections after a turbulent electioneering in the state and the legal tussle that urshed in Gomina Kayode Fayemi.
There was polical aparthy in the state.
At the time, Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State (BSES) was undergoing restructuring and structural renovation, paving way for NTA as the only broadcasting station in operation in the state.
There came a call to the Manager, news and current Affairs department (MNCA) of the Federal broadcasting station, this time it was a call from the government house Ado Ekiti, the state government needed NTA team to cover activities of state government monitoring team on voters registration exercise in some local governments.
“Adewumi (me) this call is for you, you will be following the state government to monitor voters registration exercise and will have to get your story ready for 7pm news,” said MNCA
I quickly rushed for my gadgets, writing materials and visual recording set. I proceeded to the programs department to notify them and booked for camera, the handler and driver.
We got to the governor’s Office 45 minutes after the call came in, we waited for the governor’s team headed by the Secretary to the state government for the official assignment.
“Are you the guy from NTA”, asked the SSG. I professionally replied ” yes sir” he said “good let’s go”.
As we proceeded from the state capital Ado-Ekiti to Oye local government, the governor and the SSG’s Local government, the reception from the residents was initially heated up but after a hard laboured sensitization and orientation on the importance of excercising their franchise, they massively participated in the exercise and we left with soft filled joy.
Fast forwarded back to the state capital the last spot, as a necessity of craving such reports with security input from the police, here was this articulate man, smart and well dressed police officer going round the registration points.
“Good afternoon sir” I greeted him professionally; ” hello gentlemen of the press, how may I help you” he asked.
I requested for an interview which he granted, Of course he granted us the interview, he said the exercise has been going smoothly, peacefully and hitch free.
He said he will ensure the tempo is sustained till the end of the exercise and the coming elections in the state.
And yes he never eat his words, the electioneering was indeed peaceful!
He was the architect of the peaceful exercise! He coordinated it, spearheaded the security phase, all parties involved were happy including the media.
What a success it was!
His appointment as the new Inspector General of Police will not only bring sanity to the system but will also ensure a professional and independent policing throughout the federation.
His coming on board at this time that the Nigerian Police is at the cross road with the forthcoming elections as a big task is a perfect tenable to the watchword of peaceful, free and fair election.
I believe the time has come where police will not only be responsible to a certain section of the country but serves as true face of the entire nation.
With his appointment, there is no gainsaying that the issue of sectionalism, nepotism, professional wrecklessness and insecurity would be watered down and become history.
Here is a new adventure and public friendly policing in Nigeria.
Congratulations IGP Adamu Mohammed!
